Functioning as one of Tatooine's main cities and spaceports, Mos Eisley is a "wretched hive of scum and villainy." -- Ben Kenobi. The mass amounts of aliens and spacers moving through the area, and its distance from the Republic or Imperial centers made it a haven for smugglers and pirates. Founded around 85 years before the Battle of Yavin, the city grew from the wrecked colony ship Dowager Queen. It is a main rest stop for spacers and attracts interstellar commerce.

After the excitement of podracing waned, the capital of Tatooine was moved from Mos Espa to Mos Eisley, causing the population to triple. During the Galactic Civil War, both Jabba the Hutt and Valarian, a female Whipid, used the city as a base of operations.

The city is broken down into two sections. The Old Quarter surrounds the wreckage of the Dowager Queen, while the New Quarter contains the tourist areas. After Jabba's death, the city went into a state of chaos and much of it was burned and looted. This caused the planet to be removed from major shipping lanes.

Mos Eisley is home to the Mos Eisley Cantina, Mos Eisley Towers, and Mos Eisley Inn.
