Padmé Amidala was elected Queen of Naboo at the age of only 14. She soon faced her first crisis with the Trade Federation blockade, and was required to escape with the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. She planned to make her way to Coruscant, to plead her case to the Senate. On the way, the Royal Starship had a hyperdrive leak, and she needed to make a stop on the desert planet of Tatooine. Disguised as the handmaiden Padmé Naberrie, she went with Qui-Gon, her faithful droid R2-D2 and the Gungan Jar Jar Binks to the city of Mos Espa to find parts. No one was willing to trade for Republic credits, and so they were delayed. She encountered the 9 year old Anakin Skywalker, who recognised that she was special. She was sceptical about Qui-Gon's willingness to bet in the Podraces, for the ship parts and Anakin's freedom, which Anakin won anyway. Anakin came with them to Coruscant. Amidala found that the Federation stifled all attempts to help Naboo in the Senate, and she was forced to bring down Chancellor Valorum, who was replaced by her senator, Palpatine. She had no choice but to return to Naboo to fight for her planet's freedom. She brought about the amity between Boss Nass of the Gungans and the Naboo. The Queen led the attack into the royal palace, and managed to defeat Nute Gunray, viceroy of the Federation, with the assistance of her captain Panaka, her handmaidens Rabé, Sabé and Eirtaé, her loyal soldiers and the Jedi. She regained her throne with a celebration of victory.

Ten years later, Amidala was no longer queen, and had been made senator of Naboo. She was the target of an assassination attempt on her life on her return to Coruscant, where she was travelling to cast her vote against the creation of an army to stop the Separatists. Obi-Wan, and his now nineteen year old apprentice Anakin were assigned to protect her. After another assassination attempt, Amidala was taken back to Naboo for safety. Anakin would protect her, while Obi-Wan would hunt out the would-be killer. Anakin and Padmé found themselves falling in love, but Padmé tried to stop this. They both returned to Tatooine to find Anakin's mother, Shmi. After her death, they travelled to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan. They were caught however, and were put with him in the arena to be killed. Their resourcefulness prevailed and they managed to defeat the carnivorous animals which tried to kill them. A clone army led by Yoda turned up to rescue them, and defeat Count Dooku and the Separatists. It was discovered that Gunray had been behind the attacks on Padmé, wanting revenge for his defeat. The Jedi and the clones defeated Dooku's battle droids, but Dooku and Gunray escaped with the plans for a terrible weapon of destruction. Anakin and Padmé returned to Naboo, where they gave themselves in to their feelings, and married.

After the Clone Wars, Padme argues that Palpatine should resign his power as Supreme Chancellor, but still remain as leader of the Republic. She gives birth to the twins Luke and Leia.
