The Twi'lek species has a history of slavery, especially the females of this race. Many female Twi'leks serve as dancers or waitresses in outer-rim cantinas or private viewing rooms of criminals and gangsters. Aayla Secura was one Twi'lek female who was more that a slave, although her life started out this way - she was a Jedi Knight. Aayla fought valiantly in the Clone Wars, alongside other more well-known figures such as Obi Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker.

Born into slavery on Ryloth, Aayla was the niece of Lon Secura. When Jedi Master Tholme and his Padawan Apprentice, Quinlan Vos came to speak with Lon Secura, Vos saved Aayla from a rampaging wampa. Vos' saving of Aayla was due, in part, to Aayla's ability to use The Force. She was taken to Coruscant for testing, and eventually, Jedi Training.

She studied under both Quinlan Vos and Master Tholme, although she was primarily Vos' Padawan. She helped rescue Tholme on Ryloth, after she and Quinlan Vos faced two Morgukai Warriors. Master Tholme was taken hostage while trying to rescue Nat Secura from the clutches of K'haris Fenn. Nat Secura was the prime heir of the clan Secura on Ryloth. As such, his survival was of the utmost importance to the clan. Lon Secura brought in Master Tholme, an old friend, to mediate the situation.

Aayla Secura was undergoing her final trial to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight during this mission. The final test of a Jedi is given to a Padawan through The Force. Every Padawan has a different third trial. Aayla had a tendency to question herself, to hesitate when action needed to be performed quickly. She returned to Quinlan Vos, after rescuing Tholme and Nat Secura, even though Vos had ordered her not to. With this decisive action, she passed her final trial, and became a Jedi Knight. Upon successful completion of the mission, Aayla Secura was promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight.

Aayla Secura was one of the Jedi who fought in - and survived - the Battle of Geonosis.
